In a Car Accident in Alberta? How to Get Massage Covered | South Edmonton
I was in a car accident in Alberta. Can I get massage covered?
Often, yes. Under Alberta's Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols Regulation, sprain, strain and whiplash (WAD I and II) injuries from a car accident can include massage therapy and acupuncture as part of your treatment plan, billed to your auto insurer. Get assessed by a doctor, physiotherapist or chiropractor first.

How do I start an MVA claim for massage in Alberta?
1) Report the accident to your auto insurer as soon as possible (the Notice of Loss form AB-1 should be submitted within 10 business days or as soon as practicable). 2) See a doctor, physiotherapist or chiropractor, who completes your Treatment Plan (form AB-2); make sure massage or acupuncture is listed. 3) Get your claim number and adjuster's contact, then book your MVA Initial Assessment & Massage with us.

What should I bring to my MVA appointment?
Bring your claim number, the insurance company name, your adjuster's name and phone number, the date of the accident, a copy of your Treatment Plan (AB-2) if you have it, photo ID, and your extended health benefits card. You'll also complete our MVA intake form.

Do I have to pay upfront for MVA massage?
For treatment within the DTPR protocol, visits are pre-authorized and billed directly to your auto insurer, so there is usually no upfront cost to you. Missed or late-cancelled appointments can be charged to you, and treatment beyond the protocol may require your extended health plan or insurer approval.
