Is Alberta Auto Insurance Changing in 2027? Late Claims and Acupuncture | South Edmonton
Here are answers about Alberta's upcoming auto insurance changes, claiming after time has passed and acupuncture or TMJ treatment through an MVA claim.
Is Alberta's auto insurance changing in 2027?
Yes. Alberta's new Care-First auto insurance system starts January 1, 2027 for accidents on or after that date, replacing the current visit limits with care that is reasonable and necessary for recovery. Some services, including massage outside the standard program of care, may need insurer approval first, so we'll help you check before treatment. Accidents before 2027 stay under the current rules.

My accident was a while ago. Can I still claim treatment?
Possibly. Insurers ask to be notified as soon as practicable, so contact your auto insurer right away even if some time has passed. Your adjuster can confirm what's covered.

Can I get acupuncture or TMJ treatment through my MVA claim?
Acupuncture is considered adjunct therapy under the Alberta protocol, and some TMJ soft tissue injuries are included. Ask your doctor, physio or chiropractor to list it on your Treatment Plan (AB-2), and confirm with your adjuster.
