What Is the Alberta DTPR and WAD I vs WAD II? | South Edmonton
Alberta's Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols Regulation sets the rules for many car accident injuries. Here is what it means for your treatment.
What is the Alberta Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols Regulation (DTPR)?
The DTPR sets out how common car-accident injuries like sprains, strains, whiplash (WAD I and II) and some TMJ injuries are treated and paid for in Alberta. Treatment visits are pre-authorized and paid directly by the auto insurer: generally up to 10 combined visits for WAD I or grade 1–2 sprains/strains, and up to 21 for WAD II or grade 3 sprains/strains (physio, chiropractic and adjunct therapy like massage and acupuncture combined).

What's the difference between WAD I and WAD II?
WAD (whiplash-associated disorder) I means neck pain, stiffness or tenderness without physical signs found on exam. WAD II includes neck complaints plus signs like reduced range of motion or point tenderness. Your doctor, physio or chiropractor will determine the grade, which affects how many protocol visits you have.

What happens if I use up my MVA visits?
If you still need care after the protocol visits, additional treatment isn't pre-authorized. It is usually paid first by your extended health benefits, then by your auto insurer's Section B medical benefits, subject to insurer review and approval.

The accident wasn't my fault. Does that change anything?
In Alberta, Section B accident benefits through your own auto policy are available regardless of who was at fault. Your insurer will guide you on any other claims.
